Timnath-serah

Timnath-serah, meaning remaining portion or abundant portion, was the city in the hill country of Ephraim granted to Joshua as his personal inheritance after the distribution of the land to the tribes (Josh. 19:50). He built and settled there after the completion of the conquest, and was buried there at his death (Josh. 24:30). The site is identified with Khirbet Tibnah in the central highlands.

It is called Timnath-heres in Judges 2:9, a slight variation that has been explained as a reversal of the syllables or a difference between scribal traditions. The granting of Timnath-serah to Joshua after all the tribes received their portions reflects his selfless service — he requested his inheritance last among all Israel's leaders. The site's association with his burial gave it enduring memorial significance.
