Timotheus

Timotheus is the Greek form of the name Timothy, used interchangeably with the anglicized form in Acts and in the epistles. The Revised Version consistently renders it "Timothy." He was the son of a Jewish mother and a Greek father from Lystra (Acts 16:1), converted through Paul's ministry and circumcised by Paul before joining the missionary team. He became one of Paul's most trusted companions and emissaries.

The name means honoring God or valued of God. Paul sent him as his representative to Thessalonica (1 Thess. 3:2), Corinth (1 Cor. 4:17), and Philippi (Phil. 2:19), and eventually entrusted him with oversight of the church at Ephesus (1 Tim. 1:3). Two of Paul's pastoral epistles are addressed to him. See also Timothy.
