Tiras

Person

Tiras was the youngest of the seven sons of Japheth in the Table of Nations (Gen. 10:2; 1 Chr. 1:5), making him a grandson of Noah and an ancestor of the nations descended from the Japhetic line. The Tiras clan or people have been variously identified by ancient and modern commentators as the Tyrsenoi (Tyrrhenians or Etruscans), the Thracians, or a seafaring Aegean people.

No biblical narrative involves Tiras beyond his listing in the genealogy. His inclusion in the Table of Nations reflects the ancient Israelite understanding that all known peoples descended from Noah's three sons, providing a theological framework for the diversity of nations. The identification of Tiras with the Etruscans or Thracians is suggested by similarity of names but remains speculative, as the Table of Nations reflects ancient Near Eastern geographic knowledge rather than modern ethnography.
