Uphaz

Uphaz is mentioned in Jeremiah 10:9 as a source of fine gold used in the fashioning of idols: "Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz." Daniel 10:5 also uses the phrase "fine gold of Uphaz" to describe the brilliant appearance of the angelic figure in Daniel's final vision. The location of Uphaz is uncertain: many scholars identify it with Ophir, the famous gold-producing region reached by Solomon's ships (1 Kings 9:28), suggesting that Uphaz may be a variant spelling or textual variant of Ophir.

Other proposals place Uphaz in Yemen (southern Arabia) or along the Indian Ocean coast. The Revised Version and several modern translations follow the reading "Ophir" rather than "Uphaz" in some manuscripts. Whether the two names refer to the same location or to distinct gold sources, both contexts use the gold as a symbol of the highest quality and the greatest wealth.
