Watchfulness

Watchfulness is the posture of alert spiritual attention — being on guard against sin, temptation, apostasy, and false teaching, and remaining ready for the Lord's return. The OT figure of the watchman (tsopheh) stood on the city walls to warn of approaching danger; Ezekiel applies this to the prophet's vocation (Ezek. 3:17; 33:6–7). The Proverbs urge guarding the heart "with all vigilance" (Prov. 4:23).

Jesus's eschatological teaching centers on watchfulness: "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour" (Matt. 25:13); "Stay awake" (Mark 13:35–37). Gethsemane shows disciples who fail to watch even for an hour (Matt. 26:40–41). Peter's injunction to "be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour" (1 Pet. 5:8) connects watchfulness to spiritual warfare. Paul's farewell to the Ephesian elders is a call to vigilant oversight of the flock against wolves from within and without (Acts 20:28–31). The seals of Revelation repeatedly call the churches to hear and watch.
