Watchings

Watchings (Greek agrupniai, literally "sleeplessnesses") appears in Paul's list of hardships endured in apostolic ministry in 2 Corinthians 6:5 and 11:27 — catalogues of suffering that include beatings, imprisonments, stonings, shipwreck, perils of travel, and both hunger and watchings. The term denotes involuntary sleeplessness arising from the demands and dangers of mission: nights spent working to avoid being a burden (1 Thessalonians 2:9; 2 Thessalonians 3:8), nights of prayer (Luke 6:12), and nights of anxiety and danger when rest was impossible. Paul's inclusion of watchings in a formal list of apostolic credentials reflects his understanding that physical suffering and deprivation are marks of genuine ministry rather than evidence of failure — a perspective that challenged Corinthian Christians who prized comfort and eloquence in their spiritual leaders.
