Wimple

Wimple (Hebrew mitpachot) appears in Isaiah 3:22 in the KJV's rendering of a list of women's clothing items that God will take away from the daughters of Zion as a judgment. Modern translations render the word as "shawls" (RSV, NIV, ESV) or "cloaks" — a large outer wrap or veil worn by women. The same Hebrew root appears in Ruth 3:15 where Boaz tells Ruth to hold out her shawl (mitpachot) and he fills it with six measures of barley for her to carry home. The word thus describes a substantial outer garment used both as clothing and as a carrying vessel. Isaiah 3:18–24 is a remarkable catalogue of the elaborate feminine ornamentation of the Judean upper class — anklets, headbands, crescents, pendants, bracelets, scarves, and many other items — whose removal is promised as a sign of coming humiliation and desolation.
