Witness of the Spirit

The witness of the Spirit refers to the inward testimony of the Holy Spirit that believers are the children of God, described in Romans 8:16: "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." Paul's statement indicates a dual testimony — the believer's own spirit and the Holy Spirit bearing concurrent witness — producing the inner assurance of adoption. This is closely connected to the preceding verse (Romans 8:15), where Paul describes crying out "Abba, Father" by the Spirit of adoption, identifying the Trinitarian ground of this assurance: the Spirit of God's Son cries the Son's own word for God in the heart of the adopted child. The same reality underlies Galatians 4:6: "God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, 'Abba! Father!'" The witness of the Spirit became a central concept in Reformed and Puritan theology of assurance, and played a prominent role in John Wesley's doctrine of assurance of salvation.
