Zaanan

Place

Zaanan was a town in the Shephelah of Judah mentioned by the prophet Micah in a sequence of wordplays on place names in the Shephelah, lamenting the coming Assyrian invasion: the inhabitant of Zaanan does not come out (Micah 1:11). The name means place of flocks or land of going forth, and Micah's wordplay plays on the idea that the people of Zaanan would not go forth (come out), despite the root of their city's name suggesting movement. Some identify Zaanan with Zenan of Joshua 15:37, a town in the same district.
