Zebedee

Zebedee was a Galilean fisherman, the husband of Salome (daughter of Mary Cleophas, sister of Mary the mother of Jesus, according to some traditions), and the father of James and John, two of Jesus's inner circle of disciples (Matthew 4:21; 27:56; Mark 15:40). He operated a fishing business at Capernaum with hired servants, suggesting a degree of prosperity (Mark 1:20). When Jesus called James and John, they immediately left their father and his hired men in the boat — a decisive break with their family livelihood. Zebedee himself makes no further significant appearance in the Gospels, and tradition records nothing of his subsequent history. Salome was among the women at the crucifixion and at the empty tomb (Mark 15:40; 16:1).
