Zelek

Person Name

Name meaning: "the shadow or noise of him that licks or laps"

Zelek the Ammonite was one of David's thirty mighty warriors (2 Samuel 23:37; 1 Chronicles 11:39). His Ammonite origin is notable since the Ammonites were generally enemies of Israel (Deuteronomy 23:3), though individuals from surrounding nations sometimes entered Israelite service — as did Uriah the Hittite, another of the thirty. Zelek's presence in David's elite corps reflects the cosmopolitan character of David's royal army, which included Cherethites, Pelethites, and various foreigners alongside Israelites. Beyond this brief listing he appears nowhere else in the biblical record.
