Zilpah

Zilpah (meaning: distillation from the mouth) was the maidservant given to Leah by her father Laban, and subsequently given by Leah to Jacob as a secondary wife (Gen. 30:9–13). By Jacob, Zilpah bore two sons: Gad and Asher. Gad's name commemorated the good fortune Leah perceived in his birth; Asher's name expressed Leah's happiness. Both became heads of tribes in Israel.

Like Bilhah (Rachel's maidservant), Zilpah's sons were reckoned as fully tribal sons of Jacob and listed among the twelve tribes. Zilpah is mentioned in the genealogical summary of Genesis 35:26 and in the roster of those who went down to Egypt with Jacob (Gen. 46:18), where her four grandsons are also listed.
