Zimmah

Zimmah (meaning: thought; wickedness) is the name of several Gershonite Levites in the genealogies of Chronicles. (1.) A Gershonite Levite in the lineage recorded in 1 Chronicles 6:20. (2.) Another Gershonite Levite appearing in a parallel genealogy at 1 Chronicles 6:42. (3.) The father of Joah, who was one of the Levites who assisted Hezekiah in the cleansing of the temple (2 Chr. 29:12).

The presence of the same name at several points in the Gershonite lineage is consistent with the pattern of reusing ancestral names across generations. The Joah son of Zimmah who served under Hezekiah represents the family's continued Levitical service in the era of temple reform.
