Zophim, Field of

The Field of Zophim (meaning: field of watchers) was a location in Moab on the range of Pisgah, to which Balak brought Balaam for his second attempt to curse Israel (Num. 23:14). From this elevated vantage point Balaam looked out over the Israelite encampment and, as before, could speak only the word the Lord gave him — a blessing rather than the curse Balak had hired him to pronounce.

The name "field of watchers" suggests a high lookout point where sentinels could survey the surrounding terrain. Easton tentatively identifies it with the modern Tal'at-es-Safa on the Pisgah ridge. The scene at Zophim is part of the extended Balaam narrative that spans Numbers 22–24 and culminates in Balaam's final oracles concerning the star from Jacob.
