Zur
Person Name
Name meaning: "stone; rock; that besieges"
Zur (meaning: stone; rock; that besieges) is the name of two men in the Old Testament. (1.) One of the five kings of Midian defeated and killed by Israel during the campaign ordered by God in response to Midian's seduction of Israel at Baal-peor (Num. 31:8; Josh. 13:21). Zur was the father of Cozbi, the Midianite woman killed by Phinehas along with Zimri in Numbers 25. He is identified as a chief and prince of Midian. (2.) A Benjamite, son of Jehiel the father of Gibeon and his wife Maachah (1 Chr. 8:30; 9:36). This Zur was thus an ancestor of the Gibeonite/Benjamite family from whom King Saul descended.
