Zuriel
Person Name
Name meaning: "rock or strength of God"
Zuriel (meaning: rock or strength of God) was the son of Abihail and chief of the Merarite families of Levi at the time of the Exodus census (Num. 3:35). The Merarites were the third division of the Levites (alongside the Gershonites and Kohathites) and were responsible for the boards, bars, pillars, bases, and other structural elements of the tabernacle. Their encampment was assigned to the north side of the tabernacle.
Zuriel's name combines the common element zur ("rock") with el ("God"), a theophoric compound affirming God as the family's strength and foundation. He appears only in this one census reference and is otherwise unattested in Scripture.
